1) Choose a business structure and register your company

1) Choose a name for your business.

2) Choose a legal structure: LLC is more common.

3) Register the business with the Secretary of State of Your State.

4) Get your EIN (Employer Identification Number) from IRS (Free): IRS.gov.

2) Subscribe to the USDOT number

Necessary for all operators who operate commercial vehicles on the state lines. Apply to the FMCSA website: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov.

3)  Subscribe to the number of MC (operational authority)

Necessary to transport regulated goods in the states by rent. Apply through FMCSA: Unified Registration System (URS). Fee: US $ 300 (not refundable).

4) Obtain the filing BOC-3 (Process Agent)

Required by FMCSA to assign a legal representative in each state. It can be filed only by a BOC-3 processing company. Cost: $ 20 to $ 50 (single).

5) Buy insurance (responsibility and load)

Must have liability insurance (minimum of $ 750,000; most operators receive $ 1 million). If you carry shipping, you will need load insurance (minimum of $ 100,000). Its insurer Archives BMC-91 or BMC-34 with FMCSA.

6) UCR File (Unified Carrier Registration)

Required annually for interstate carriers. Fleet size rates. Archive on: www.ucr.gov.

7) Apply IFTA (Fuel Tax Agreement)

Necessary to operate through the state lines. Apply with the revenue/transport department of your home state. Help you report and pay fuel taxes quarterly.

8) Register for the IRP (International Registration Plan)

Necessary if you travel through the states with a commercial vehicle. Payment based on miles traveled in each state. Subscribe through the motor vehicle agency of your state.

9) Subscribe to a drug and alcohol test program

Mandatory if you have a CDL and operate commercial trucks. Join a consortium approved by DOT.

3) Insurance Certificate (COI)

4) BOC-3 form

5) Leases (if rented)

6) Vehicle registration, IRP and ifta decals
